Tl Dr this opinion is essentially formed from anecdotal evidence from about 25 people who came through my lab. I know Oculus had been working on it when they still operated under that name. But I think as interpolation gets better, we'll notice less problems. Personally, I'm not certain those injected frames don't have a little bit of lag added (another potential source of discomfort). He spent two weeks optimizing and we were back to where we needed to be. Crank it down to 80hz 100% texture resolution and we still had stutters. added resolution, fov, or refresh rate?Įventually came to the conclusion it was resolution and refresh (we didn't have the newest gaming hardware but it was hood enough at the time). The dev and I were both unsure where exactly the bottleneck was coming from. Since it ran well 80% of the time with green frame timings in steam vr, I decided to leave interpolation on to get some honest feedback on the new hardware vs where our development was. We hadn't run it over 90hz so after I tested it at 120 & 144hz my note to our dev was to work on optimization. This wasn't any groundbreaking study either, we had about half of the testers (10 or so) in the lab using our new Index reporting discomfort they didn't on our 90hz Vive's a week prior. Haven't found anything decent, but it's a stop gap for stuttering. Think first Gen mobile VR vs quest 2 expectations. A lot of initial negative opinions of vr come from sub par experiences from running either on low end hardware that makes the user sick, or every thing is dialed back so far, it breaks their expectations from ads. With this said, VR is honestly in need of a good benchmarking application or devs really need to start implementing their own. I think frame interpolation messes with your head and your brain just can't process the janky frames between the good ones. I honestly would like to see a g/free sync technology implemented into newer headsets. Combined with our gpu frame timings graph it was clear they had problems with the frame interpolation.

They described feeling the headset visuals distorting when looking at a scene full of assets. I noticed that after we got the Index and I cranked it to 144hz, we had quite a few people who, at 90hz with no issues previously, started having discomfort.

At the time we were creating our own software for researchers to examine transfer of training between vr and real world. That 25% can really change someone's response if they are going to get sick or not. We came to the conclusion it's always better to play at a consistent 90hz if at 120hz we have frame interpolation 25% of the time. Refresh rate / frame timings itself isn't a problem until you start getting into higher action/faster games. Once you get a symptom or two your body starts trying to fight it thinking you've poisoned yourself, hence the nausea. Headaches being a symptom of vr sickness. Incorrect ipd can lead to headaches and eyestrain. The fluid in your inner ear thins out when you drink and stays at its worst while you're hungover. Unexpected motion (theme park simulations highlight these)īeing hungover. Stuttering is probably the largest contributor. Low refresh rates compound these problems when it comes to how fast someone gets vr sickness.
Iirc to a motion sickness study their data was around 13% males, 18% female. With that said, some people are just naturally prone to getting motion sick when there's a vestibular disconnect even in the best scenarios. If you're running it on the same hardware it would be interesting to know if you had any differences using it at 120hz (if it was a Q2, or dropping the index down to 80/90). If they owned a Quest 2 I would say their 3 ipd settings the user is limited to, likely contributed. Used to run a VR lab when I was in University.
